Shubhman Gill ,The New Rabbit from Selector's Magic Hat!

Shubman Gill being appointed as India’s Test captain feels more like a decision made out of compulsion than conviction. While Gill is undoubtedly a stylish batter with potential, his test record—especially overseas—is underwhelming. In his entire career so far, he has managed just one fifty outside Asia. His average is 26. His struggle against the moving ball is well-known, and most of his runs have come on batting-friendly pitches at home. Here, his average is 46.

The selectors seem to have based their choice on his white-ball success and the perception that he’s a long-term prospect. It’s true that he has shown temperament and maturity in ODIs and the IPL, but Test cricket in places like England or South Africa is a different ball game.

They probably wanted a young player with pedigree to groom for the future.

Rishabh Pant, who has been India’s best Test batter over the last three years, was an option. He has scored crucial hundreds in Australia, England, and South Africa and averages around 43 in Tests since 2021. But his unpredictable nature and the pressure that captaincy brings—something that affected his performance when he led in the IPL—might have made the selectors hesitant.

Bumrah could have been a tactically sound choice, but his fitness remains a concern. With a packed test calendar ahead, especially 18 matches in the current WTC cycle until 2027, it's unlikely he’ll be available for every game. KL Rahul is just making a comeback into the red-ball setup and hasn’t cemented his place yet.

So, in a way, Gill got the captaincy because there weren’t many strong alternatives. This move looks more like a stopgap arrangement.

The real test will come when India plays a tough away series. If he delivers under those conditions, this could turn into a long-term solution. Otherwise, we might see the leadership reins handed over again based on performances in the WTC cycle.

Let’s see how this unfolds. For now, it’s more of a wait-and-watch than a real celebration..of an exciting new captain.
