HAPPY 53RD BIRTHDAY RAHUL DRAVID, THE WALL OF Indian cricket .

Happy Birthday, Rahul Dravid!

I am an ardent Saurav Ganguly fan, and it's fascinating to reminisce about the debut of two cricketing legends at Lord's in 1996. Ganguly, batting at number 3, marked his entry with a century, while Dravid fell just short with a score of 96.

Rahul Dravid, known for his seriousness and technical prowess, epitomizes calmness on the field. His straight elbow aligns perfectly with his head, showcasing his commitment to the game. Dravid avoids unnecessary risks, rarely charging down the wicket and minimizing chances of stumping throughout his illustrious career.

A meticulous batsman, Dravid excels in pulls, drives, and cuts, avoiding risky shots until well-set. His dedication to team dynamics is remarkable; he willingly took on diverse roles, even bowling off-spin and excelling as a slip catcher.

Dravid's partnership with VVS Laxman during the historic 2001 series against Australia, breaking the invincible streak, remains etched in cricketing lore. His leadership saw India triumph in England in 2007, ending a 21-year drought. Post-captaincy, he advised senior players to skip the 2007 T20 World Cup, paving the way for emerging talent and the birth of the IPL.

Quietly retiring when he sensed a dip in his form, Dravid gracefully passed the baton to Cheteshwar Pujara. His coaching journey, from nurturing Karnataka to shaping the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, has been monumental. Dravid's guidance has shaped the likes of Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Rishabh Pant.

Now, as India's head coach, Dravid aspires to clinch a World Cup—a dream he couldn't achieve as a player. His dedication, selflessness, and passion for Indian cricket make him a rare symbol of tenacity, hard work, and mentorship.

On this special day, we salute Rahul Dravid, a cricketing maestro whose soul breathes Indian cricket. As we celebrate his birthday, may it mark the beginning of a triumphant chapter in his coaching journey, culminating in the coveted World Cup.

P.S.: It's heartening to hear about Dravid's son progressing in junior cricket. The prospect of more Dravids gracing the cricketing arena adds to the anticipation of a glorious future

South Africa’s Long-Awaited ICC Victory: More Than Just a Trophy

South Africa’s recent ICC trophy win — after 27 years of heartbreak — isn’t just about cricket. It’s a powerful symbol of resilience, redemption, and transformation. For decades, South Africa has produced world-class players — Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Hashim Amla — yet somehow, they could never lift that elusive global title. Many called them “chokers,” cursed for faltering in the most crucial moments. The 1999 World Cup semi-final tie, the 2003 rain-rule miscalculation, and other knockouts became painful memories etched into their cricketing identity. But South Africa’s story goes far beyond wins and losses. It is deeply entangled with the history of apartheid — a system that not only oppressed but completely excluded black South Africans from elite sport. Until 1991, cricket was largely a white man's game in that country. After apartheid ended, the country didn’t just need to rebuild a team — it had to rebuild a nation’s sense of belonging. And that’s where the...

Indian Women’s Cricket: A Dream Realized, A New Era Begins

Indian Women’s Cricket: A Dream Realized, A New Era Begins Dr B.S.Chakravarthy 03/11/2025 When Kapil Dev’s team lifted the World Cup in 1983, Indian cricket entered a new era. That victory transformed cricket from merely a sport into a way of life in India. The arrival of legends like Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly, Sehwag, Dhoni, Virat, and Rohit Sharma turned cricket into folklore. It grew into a mighty tree, overshadowing all other sports. But women’s cricket had been waiting for that defining moment. Yesterday, that moment arrived. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team lifted the World Cup trophy and made history. As the great Billie Jean King once said, “Champions keep playing until they get it right.” The legends who came before had been playing, fighting, and believing. Shanta Rangaswami, Diana Edulji, Jhulan Goswami, Anjum Chopra, and our Telugu girl Mithali Raj worked tirelessly for decades. Their sacrifice, dedication, and pure love for the game laid the foundation for Indian women’s cric...
